We Answer Your Questions #5

We continue our series highlighting questions we have received on our Houzz projects. Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc. is pleased to be part of the Houzz network of professionals. Houzz is the leading platform for home remodeling and design; providing people with everything they need to improve their homes from start to finish – online or from a mobile device. From decorating a small room to building a custom home and everything in between, Houzz connects millions of homeowners, home design enthusiasts and home improvement professionals across the country and around the world. Houzz is the easiest way for people to find inspiration, get advice, buy products and hire the professionals they need to help turn their ideas into reality.

Often, Houzzers (members of the app) come to us with questions about our projects. Through answering these questions, we are provided the unique opportunity to educate Houzzers about our projects.  At times, we are not able to provide specific information for privacy reasons, but make every effort to accommodate Houzzers.

This week we answer questions on the Dream Lake Home Octagonal Porch Area. This area of the home has garnered 57 questions and has been saved to 146,894 idea books at writing. A sampling of the questions are below.

Houzzer: Can I get this house built for me elsewhere?
Houzzer: Do you have plans for this house? I’d like to have it built on my lot in Southern California?

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc.: This home was custom designed by an architect for the homeowner and the grounds on which it sits. The home may not exude the same charm on another piece of property. In addition, the homeowner would need to agree to the resale of the plan and they are not interested in it’s resale. Thank you!

Houzzer: I want a similar design like this from you. How can I contact you & how much do you charge. (India)
Houzzer: Would you go as far as Milwaukee, WI?

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc.: We typically work with local clients, within 50 mile radius of our office. Local clients may contact us toll-free at 877-862-2142. We would recommend you contact a local registered architect and a reputable general contractor that understands your local building technology, geographic/climate factors, and building codes. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Houzzer: What are the dimensions of the Octagonal screen porch and the sizes of each window?

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc. We do not make it a practice to give out dimensions, as the owner paid for this service. We would be happy to provide you design services, at a fee. Thank you for the question. Additional Comment from another Houzzer: I think the beauty of the “octagonal” room is that the dimensions are in scale with the other parts of the back of the house. So, it doesn’t really matter what these people used. A room such as this would need to be designed by an architect to fit the scale of the house.

Houzzer: Was there a sealer used on the stamped concrete?

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc.: Because of the extreme weather conditions in our area, we do seal concrete. Product used was Sonneborn Kure-N-Seal Water Based sealant.

Houzzer: Love the sconces–who makes them?

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc.: We did not furnish the lighting; it came from the owner and designer. They shopped for the exterior lighting through Indiana Lighting Center, Inc. Similar fixtures are most likely available through any reputable lighting supplier.

Houzzer: What is the approximate size of the fire pit patio area?

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc.: We apologize, but the landscaper for the project installed the fire pit, and we do not have the dimensions.

Houzzer: Love the fire pit how is it made?

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc.: It is set on a stamped concrete base. The pit itself was built out of fieldstone by a mason. For convenience, it has a gas run to it for lighting the logs.

Houzzer: What is the retaining wall made from? Looks great!

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc.: The homeowner contracted landscaping outside of our contract and as such, we don’t have record of the landscaping materials. Buechel Stone had commented some time ago that they thought the product could possibly be Fond du Lac Wall Stone. It does look quite a bit like it.

Houzzer: Where can I buy the double entry doors?

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc.: They were custom made for the project by Rockwood Products Ltd. of Millersburg, Ohio. They are a member of Houzz.

Houzzer: What color is the roof?

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc.: We used CertainTeed Landmark shingles in Moire Black.

Houzzer: Brand and Color of paint on the trim? Can you provide any details on the white trim paint? Is it pure white?

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc.: The trim is Azek and color is white. We have included a link to the Azek website. Any paint that would have been used on this project would have been Benjamin Moore.

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc. It was custom blended stain on pine.

Houzzer: What floor tile was used?

Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc.: It is a 16×16 Silver Sands Slate tile. Installed by Halsey Tile Co. of Elkhart
